king james

saw this amazing james coviello design on VK's site and was compelled to run right out to get my hot little hands on a fall 2008 issue. it wasn't in my LYS yet, but thank god for barnes & noble.

upon further investigation, i also found this adorable LBD version of the jacket on james's charming website.

of course, i could save myself hours of knitting time and just order one here, but that just wouldn't be anywhere near as fun, would it? normally, i'd say it wouldn't be anywhere near as economical, either. but the VK version calls for at least 10 balls of alchemy sanctuary. which is going for $16.50 a ball at purl soho. that is, if you can get your hands on the stuff. according to their website, there's only one ball of the blackest black and zero of the amethyst or citrine.

damn! i am positive sanctuary is worth the price of admission. alchemy yarns are so exquisitely spun and dyed in the most beautiful colors. i just don't think i can wait til they get more in stock. i am thinking blue sky alpaca or alpaca silk would be an ideal sub. any other thoughts?

this pattern looks to be the perfect fall project. there is even a stitch tutorial in VK which shows how to work the delicately sculpted petals. and i have been jonesing for sleeve volume like this ever since i first drooled over this poufy gucci number a couple of summers ago.

anyway, all of this is just the kick in the skein i needed to get my VK ribbed mini dress finito.

I just cast one for this today! I didn't spring for the suggested yarn, but am using Mission Fall 136 Merino instead. I also fell in love with this thing the instant I saw it!!

I'm loving the looks of that jacket, too! (But have my hands full with other projects, so will watch yours grow and live vicariously through your blog!)

I want the dress! But I'm not that sure whether the style would fit me...

Now I'm tempted to try to make a version of the dress! Alpaca Silk would work well. Will have more drape probably.

The alchemy sanctuary is really nice. I used it to make the appalachian bag in the folk style. It is normally 26.50 +. Quite chunk of change. I heard that Alchemy was going to try doing some of their hand painted in a larger less individual process in order to bring the prices down but I don't recall which yarns. RYC has some nice DK.s as does Sublime and Debbie Bliss. They are a little more available and a little less $

Coming in late to say, I've never regretted anything I've knit of Alpaca Silk -- though it is quite drapey, and I suspect would become shapeless if knit too loosely.
