i'm starsky, he's margiela

my friend jason is coveting this huggy bear of a martin margiela pullover. (and by "coveting," i mean he wants me to knit it for him.) seems vaguely reminiscent of starsky's cowichan, sans the cowichan, of course. and sans starsky. (yo, check the perm.)

which got me to thinking about the whole cowichan thing...maybe it was the sweater...maybe it was the jack and tab. in any event, there is a great writeup on the history of the craft here. and i seem to recall seeing an article recently in IK, as well.

starsky was hardly the first sex symbol to rock the look.

then i remembered this twinkle design from fall 2007. how now cowichan!

my now OCD-fueled quest for the cowichan also turned up this other semi-fug, semi-cool faux-co ski dress. there's something about this dress that makes me want to go put a big fur hat on my head. maybe starsky was onto something after all.

of course, none of this puts me any closer to finding the actual pattern (or reasonable facisimile thereof) for the MM pullover. any ideas where i can find one? i'm not sure i have the strength to figure this one out on my own.

Oh, you can totally figure out the margiela sweater. It's got no shaping in the torso, just straight rectangular panels of moss stitch and cables in a bulky yarn. The neck hole is a perfect rectangle too. The armscyes have some shaping -- the third cable of each group of cables disappears into the armscye decreases. Much easier than the fake-a-gamo, which I am truly impressed by!

so you say, lisa! ;) well, thanks for the vote of confidence. i am also hopeful about finding a basic aran pattern i can adapt. i mean, it looks pretty classic, right?

I knew I had a sweater pattern like that. Wouldn't you know, I found it. It's in a pattern booklet called Generations of Aran from Plymouth yarns. The cables are different, and the pattern looks like it has true drop shoulders, but that hot collar is the same. I have a scanner, so I'll scan the cover for you...and put it on flickr. I'm zigzagstitch over there.

woah, mandy...say it isn't so! i guess this means i may have to actually make the dang thang for him now. (sigh.) seriously, you're awesome for digging up the pattern and take the trouble to scan for me. you're a dolly! hugs, kate

I love that dress!

This (http://www.caron.com/projects/ss_eco/sseco_mans_sweater.html) might be a good place to start. I know it doesn't exactly look like the sweater, but it has a similar collar and some cables and it's a FREE pattern. Good luck!

Or there's this bad boy (http://www.flickr.com/photos/7489502@N04/2271092377/in/set-72157608144436417/).

But finding that Patons booklet might not be too easy.

How about a spin on this quest - there is a book Salish Indian Sweaters by Priscilla A. Gibson Roberts. It's old and the price is up there on Amazon etc. but if you know any knit books collectors ....

now i'm confused...aren't the cowichan indians and salish one in the same? in any case, that book rocks. wish i could find one that wasn't so expensive. or i could go old school and check the library i guess.

The Cowichan (Quw'utsun) people are Salish speakers that come from the Cowichan valley on Vancouver Island. Salish refers to the language group spoken by many First Nations people throughout the southern coastal BC and coastal Washington state region. Nice sweaters.
