"long viewed as the domain of grandmothers..."
why must every piece of mainstream press on knitting begin with these words? hasn't knitting been "cool" since, like, the last millennium? and furthermore, when was the last time these people took a look at today's grandmothers? we should all be so hip.
but i digress. the point of my rant isn't really a rant at all. it's mostly a rave. about this: the radical lace and subversive knitting exhibit at the museum of arts and design in nyc.
the owner of my fave LYS is planning an overnight road trip to see it in march. we'll board amtrak in rochester and knit all the way down. we're planning to hit up some yarn shops, take in the exhibit, and then return home the next day.
on another note, it's a good thing we're not flying. is it just me or have you noticed a teensy bit of a backlash against knitting on planes? my knit-challenged friends were ribbing me about my pointy sticks last week as we got ready to go through security on the flight home from aspen. i tossed it off as jealousy until i came across this tidbit. and it's not just the frequent fliers that are hassling us. check out this bit from click and clack.
maybe knitting at home isn't such a bad idea after all. just don't make me sit in a rocking chair.

Ribbing? No pun intended, eh?
Seriously, though, I would never take needles as big as drum sticks on a plane, mainly because I don't want to tickle the passengers on either side of me! I think etiquette demands circulars in cases like this, don't you?
And, circulars draw less attention to us "security risks." We can keep on knitting as long as nobody's complaining!
The education system in this country clearly has not been teaching sufficient critical thinking skills...at least not to anyone involved in the management of the TSA.
Those are some great pictures. The first reminds me of diatoms. Seriously. The second is just plain interesting. Jealous. That you are going to the exhibit. Have a great time. Take pics and share if you can. I haven't flown recently, but Feb after 9-11, I flew and had NO problems with 14 inch long metal needles. Gasp. That I actually used such things. At some point I began bringing my bamboo needles aboard when flying (typically from ME/MA to FL to visit mom), and passengers would always make some comment. And I'd sometimes say, as a third degree black belt, you should just plain be more worried about me than these knitting needles. Oops....not so pc, eh?
Our "security" is a joke anyway...
As far as the whole grandmother reference, at orientation at my new job, I was horrified. Everyone who knows me knows I knit. I was sitting near a girl I graduated with, and we were watching a customer service video. It showed a man waiting, sitting beside some old ugly obese women knitting a scarf... he waited so long, her scarf got finished. The girl beside me cracks up and loudly says "Hey there you are!" It made me so angry.
oooh yes, i was just reading about the subversive knitting exhibition at MoAD this morning..very very interesting, pity I can't get there to see it :(
wish you could come with us carson!
What yarn store is doing that? I go to college in Rochester.
