guess the art, win some artyarn!
this yarn collage was inspired by a famous matisse painting. the first person to correctly guess which one will win a lovely skein of artyarn!
the collage was a homework assignment from my knitwear design class. keep in mind it's verrrry abstract, e.g. it appears to be "stash hurl." mea culpa to matisse!
october 30, 2006--addendum:
apparently, i owe a bigger apology to matisse than i originally thought. despite my best efforts to pay homage to the master of color, i've failed to create a collage that's even faintly recognizable. keep guessing. my artistic reputation--to say nothing of my bruised ego--lies in the balance!

Hi hun - is it Matisse's SNAIL? I'm having a competition on my site also - nothing as grand as Matisse of course... but PLEASE suggest a sock pattern... x
Robe violette et Anemones?
oh it's got to be one of his big pink reclining nudes..executed in looks like red & rust merino with touch of terracottish mohair for the belly.
Le bonheur de vivre (The Joy of Life)! It has to be! The vibrant colors, the organic swirling yarn! I love it. A+++!
I hope to take a guess!
It's "Goldfish", so close to nature, you absorbed and enhanced really well the colors!
Or my other guess would be Le Gouter.
*fingers crossed*
Hello! Former lurker here. My guess is Odalisque with red culottes. Yay for the internets, very fascinating artist.
This is so much fun: My first choice is Still Life with Fruit, then Nature Morte Au Lierre.
BUT I must admit, whether right or wrong, I totally think of Window at Tangiers when I see these colors...
OK off to bed. Please lets do another jus t for fun sometimes!!
i think its red fish.
This is harder than it looks ... all these choices make sense to me, but I think it's "La Vis" --
My guess would be a very abstract, Open Window.
reminds me of spanish still life, or maybe it's just that painting always made me think of yarn! :) i'm inclined to think that the folks above pointing toward le bonheur de vivre are correct, however!
Blue Nude: Memory of Biskra?
Browsing posters by him, I'm guessing "Open Window, Collioure, 1905", although the person who commented in the nude makes a lot of sense!
Another Shot!
"View of Collioure" or "Music"?This is so interesting and motivating that I probably learnt so much more about Matisse I never knew before!
Open Window maybe? (in an abstract kind of way)
The swirling pattern in your collage reminds me of "Dance," artistic and abstract of course.
"La Gitane," maybe? I don't know.
It sounds like an interesting assignment, though.
i'm going to guess either 'purple robe' or 'interior with phonograph.'
I am going to say...Deux Fillettes.
But really, I have no idea. I am sure it will be completely clear when the right one is revealed. And what a fun assignment. Can I go to school with you?
I thought it was Le bonheur de vivre (The Joy of Life). Then I thought it was Odalisque with Red Culottes. But if those are not the case, then maybe, Seated Riffian (Le Rifain assis)? I noticed the light green and yellow stripes in your picture.
PS - Your ego should be happy! Inspiration is by definition an interpretation and by no means an exact copy! Regardless if it's a recognizable Matisse...it's still aesthetically pleasing in it's own right!
I'd recognize that anywhere! It's obviously "Decorative Figure on an Ornamental Ground."
Jenna, that's what I thought! Only if it is, then the figure is reversed. That's what's throwing me off... this is a real mystery, it's killing me!
I'm taking one more guess: la femme au chapeau? At the rate we're going, we will have listed all his work!
Lise
Alright, one more guess. "Odalisque with Magnolias", where you were very abstract and changed some of the colors!
Is it Les Genets?
Could it be "Dishes and Fruit on a Red and Black Carpet"?
i think it is "woman with the hat" paris, 1904-05... it's beautiful, no matter what the inspiration!
Still Life with Blue Tablecloth
or
Still Life with Apples on a Pink Tablecloth
i'm gonna go out on a limb and say interior with eggplants
Oh, yes i think amp is right - just looked at then came to post and she beat me - Interior in Aubergines!!
by the way, i don't have a blog but this is chris from Wild wools in case you're wondering.
delurking to take part in the fun!
les vegetaux?
actually you're not doing too bad, i could tell it as a matisse at the very least! :)
the colors make me think "Intérieur aux aubergines," this is fun!
i think its lying nude. eh??
