at long last apricot

about ten years ago, i saw this pink, fur-collared sweater in a magazine and fell in love with it. the only problem: it wasn't from a knitting mag. i was so enamored with the design, i clipped and taped it in my knitting journal, along with some thoughts on how to possibly adapt it to a pattern. i even got a vintage fur collar from my gram to sew onto it.

that's as far as it got.

until i saw rebecca 27 and apricot jacket:

i can't believe how similar this pattern is, right down to the curled edge on the button placket.

i just learned how to crochet (thanks laurie!), so i have no idea whether i'm doing this right. but i will have many opportunities to finesse my technique with two rectangles made and about 2,222 to go!

if lovin koigu is wrong, i don't wanna be right.

beading queen

all hail deb, the queen of the bead! i just came across this pithy, sharply illustrated crocheted beading technique for knitting with beads. wish i had found this before i made the chicken decision to omit the beads from my butterfly cami.

know when to say when

yarnover (n.): the disagreeable after-affect of having consumed too much yarn, e.g. "I have such a bad yarnover. I am never buying yarn again."

this thing ain't easy, but i managed to get through four pattern reps last night. the trick: absolutely no t.v. unless it's ESPN or a met game jimmy's watching...in that case, i can totally tune it out.

island yarn

i have knitted in many places. but none compares to the pure joy of hunkering down in an adirondack chair that overlooks the rocky cove of your own private island.

not mine, of course. but my brother's girlfriend laurie and her family are lucky enough to own a 45-acre slice of heaven off the coast of maine.

it's called pleasant island, but that doesn't begin to describe it.

there is no electricity. no plumbing. no heat. you wash in a basin outside and pee in the woods. you take your life in your hands getting there. (we arrived at dawn via a 40-foot lobster boat and had to row ashore with all of our gear--including a 13-pound norwich terrier--in a tiny wooden rowboat.) you land on the beach, exhausted, non-caffeinated, cursing. and when you're finally ready to leave, there are no guarantees that mother nature will allow it.

but then you climb up the dunes and see where you will be spending the next 48 hours of your life. actually, you don't so much see it at first. you smell it. salty air, meadow grasses, pine needles.

you walk about 100 yards to a tiny cabin. inside are the photos, feathers, sea glass, and shells wothy of being saved for a lifetime inside this weathered, shingled treasure box.

somebody puts on a pot of the best coffee you've ever tasted in your life. now it's light outside. light enough to knit. and you just happen to have a brand new ball of fresh, scratchy orange wool.

disturb me

ok, so who found my blog using the search terms "face eating tumor"? i can only imagine how disappointing it must be to get here and see pictures of fuzzy sweaters and baby hats instead of disintegrating flesh. yikes.

check out these crocheted, beaded earrings i got at anthropologie. i know, i know. the picture SUCKS. i think my camera needs reading glasses. allow me to describe them...itsy bitsy curliecues and flowers...fine gold beading...i think barbie must have whipped them up. and they are as light as a feather. i paid way too much for them...but i couldn't resist. they would be the perfect stash buster for a teeny tiny stash, no?

in the black

i'm about 15 inches into the suss tie cardigan, shown in aqua angora below. i couldn't find a shade of blue angora i really loved at my LYS, so i'm making it in baruffa black merino. as much as i love the look of angora, that stuff sheds like crazy and i end up getting the little fuzzies in my eyes. so merino it is.

the pattern is tres clever...basically a long rectangle with two holes in the middle for the set-in sleeves. and it's so easy, you can knit it with your eyes closed. i think i actually dozed off for a few rows last night while i knit and watched "laguna beach, the real orange county." (how do i get sucked into this stuff?)

it seems the height of boring to be knitting straight stockinette in black...but i just read that black is the new black! so at least mary ann will be the height of fashion.

knit up, this yarn actually feels a little sponge-y...not sure if it will be drapey enough, but i've past the point of no return. i'll MAKE it work, dammit. (or it will go into the pile of other projects i completed in denial...e.g. the fringe skirt that was obviously three times too big after the first 20 rows. hey! i know! it'll make a great floor pillow!)

!!!!!!

i was just reading my last few posts...and could i possibly be any more exclamatory? for someone who has an aversion to needless punctuation, (including, but not limited to the above-abused ellipsis points) i certainly am having no problems scattering it willy-nilly about my blog!!! what is making me so goddam chipper i wonder? could it be the complete and utter profusion of knitting patterns that i simply! must! have!
