the next shawl thing?

a woman on flickr made this shawl and after completing it, had the balls to DYE the finished piece.

i don't know what it is about lace, and i must be crazy after taking forever to complete that #$%@! birch, but must. knit. lace. shawl.

what shall i knit?

i have these three skeins of mouthwatering color. two are koigu fingering weight wool. the pink is alchemy bamboo. i was thinking of using all three to make some kind of lacy shawl. (NOT birch.)

seems to me they'd have a great drape. haven't knit up a swatch yet. maybe someone knows of a good shawl pattern?

now what?!!

finally done!

i pushed my brynspun through the last three stitches of birch and pulled the tail through the loops. i wept. it's over.

which color combo?

call me indecisive, but i've got these two yummy colors and i simply can't pick which order to knit them in for this cute striped pom pom cap pattern. what do YOU think?

I love Bob Roll

I love how he says "Tour DAY France," and how those two English guys cringe every time does.

It's hard to imagine this guy actually was a tour rider himself in the olden days. On the incredulity scale, it's right up there with imagining Archie Bunker as a tour rider.

Al Trautwig asks him if he thinks the riders notice the faces of the spectators as they fly by them. This reminds Bob of a story (I love it when Bob tells stories). He thought he was hallucinating when, out of the corner of his eye, he spied a bear along the side of the road. Turns out there really was a circus in town with a dancing bear.

I love Bob Roll.

how to make roses

flora

each flower is 6 petals: 2 large, 2 med, and 2 small.
petals are knit separately and then stitched together to make the rose.

large petal
cast on 7 sts and work in stockinette for 16 rows. cast off, leaving about a 3" tail at both ends.

med petal
cast on 6 sts and work in stockinette for 16 rows. cast off, leaving 3" tail at both ends.

small petal
cast on 5 sts and work in stockinette for 12 rows. cast off, leaving 3" tail at both ends.

to make up:
weave cast off tail through cast off row so both tails are at bottom. use other tail to make a large running stitch through the long side of petal and gather so that it turns your little rectangle into a petal (it will look like a little cup). double knot the ends to secure. repeat this for all your little rectangles, so that you have 6 little cups, each with the double-knotted tails hanging down from them. starting from the inside of the rose, hold together and stitch the two littlest cups. hold the medium cups around and secure those. repeat with large petals on the outside. separate all the tails in half and tie them all into a double knot.

experiment with different yarns and needle sizes for different sizes and textures of flowers.

you can make a whole bunch of these roses in all different colors and sizes then stitch them all together to make a beautiful rose boa...or sew onto a sweater or purse or wristlets...or whatever!
